Carbon Fibre Reinforced Steering Wheel

The objective was to develop a steering wheel that minimizes obstruction of driver’s line of sight to the digital dash and minimizes weight relative to the previous steering wheel for Formula UBC (FUBC) student design team.

Using carbon fibre reinforced composites, a custom compact steering wheel was developed while maximiizing strength/weight ratio and staying within regulated geometric design constraints. Shape and grip ergonomics was tailored to FUBC drivers using an iterative design approach with rapid prototyping equipment and materials, and frequent driver experience feedback.

Formula UBC Racing is an engineering student team that designs, builds, and races an open-wheeled, formula-style race car for an international competition each year at Formula SAE Michigan.
